GK4 Small public building: FIRE STATION

Studio GK4 is a foundation level course in architecture and building design. The topic of the studio is Small public building. This semester the studio has worked with a highly relevant assignment for a new central fire station in Bjørvika, Oslo.

The brief gives students their first advanced building programme to turn into a realistic building proposal. A range of elementary considerations of architecture, such as structure, vertical circulation and façade systems, are discussed through the students’ engagement with this programme. The studio fosters close interaction between students, lecturers and supervisors of different backgrounds to discuss both contemporary and universal architectural challenges. Of special interest at this level is the relationship between architecture and the city.

One of the aims for this course is to develop the individual student’s practical insight and personal creative interests. But similar to the previous semester, GK3: Byboligen, the studio also fosters an approach based in typological thinking, where patterns from historical and contemporary building examples form the basis for common discussion.
